Process report

This week was dedicated to knowledge area 4, with the theme of Technology & Engineering. Just like with the other knowledge areas, it wasn't entirely clear on the first day what was expected, and as a group, we were still quite unsure of our direction. The first kickoff presentation clarified some things, but it also raised many questions. However, things became clearer later that day after our first Q&A session with our mentor for the week. One thing that was clear after the kickoff presentation was that we had to choose a topic for this project. After watching the video, the Internet of Things (IoT) immediately appealed to us. We wanted to connect this with something related to our personal interests, and drinking beer ranks high on that list, if not at the very top. After doing some research, we discovered that Heineken has one of the most advanced brewing processes in the world. Hence, the topic: IoT in Heineken’s brewing process. After our Q&A session, we also unde...

Heineken’s brewing process is a combination of traditional craftsmanship and advanced technologies, with a strong emphasis on quality, efficiency, and sustainability. The process consists of various steps that are carefully monitored and optimized, and the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) plays an increasingly important role. In general, Heineken’s production process is as follows: Malting : The process begins with soaking and germinating barley to produce malt. This is a crucial ingredient for brewing beer. Mashing : The ground malt is mixed with water and heated, activating enzymes to convert the starches into sugars. Brewing : The liquid, known as wort, is then boiled, with hops added for flavor and preservation. Fermentation : After cooling, yeast is added to the wort, converting the sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This is one of the most important steps, as it determines the taste and quality of the beer. Lagering and maturing : After fermentation, the beer is cooled an...
