Measure Phase - IoT applications in the brewery sector
Introduction
In the Measure phase of our project, we focus on collecting data to gain a clear understanding of the current situation. During this phase, we will investigate how IoT is being applied in the brewery sector, with a specific focus on Heineken. The objective is to measure the impact of IoT on Process Control, Organisation, and Information (PCOI).
By gathering data on the implementation of IoT technology at Heineken, we aim to understand how it affects process control, organizational efficiency, and information management. These insights will support the next phases of the project and help identify potential areas for improvement.
IoT applications in the brewery sector:
Within the
brewery sector, the application of IoT can help improve production, quality
control, and consequently reduce costs. IoT is already being used in various
ways in various breweries.
- Smart Fermentation with IoT: Carlsberg, one of the largest
breweries in the world, uses IoT sensors in their fermentation process.
These sensors continuously measure the temperature and pressure in the
tanks. If the temperature or pressure exceeds the predefined parameters,
the system automatically sends an alert to the brewers, allowing them to
act quickly.
- Smart Kegs: Guinness has installed IoT
sensors in their kegs to monitor how much beer is left. This data is
shared with both the restaurants and pubs, as well as the distribution
center. This way, the restaurants can automatically order new kegs,
ensuring a constant supply and preventing them from running out of beer.
- Cold Chain Monitoring: At BrewDog's brewery, IoT
sensors have been implemented in their distribution chain to ensure that
the temperature in trucks and warehouses is monitored. If the temperature
rises too high, the logistics teams receive a warning and can take
immediate action to keep the beer fresh.
