Process report
This week was dedicated to knowledge area 4, with the theme of Technology & Engineering. Just like with the other knowledge areas, it wasn't entirely clear on the first day what was expected, and as a group, we were still quite unsure of our direction. The first kickoff presentation clarified some things, but it also raised many questions. However, things became clearer later that day after our first Q&A session with our mentor for the week. One thing that was clear after the kickoff presentation was that we had to choose a topic for this project. After watching the video, the Internet of Things (IoT) immediately appealed to us. We wanted to connect this with something related to our personal interests, and drinking beer ranks high on that list, if not at the very top. After doing some research, we discovered that Heineken has one of the most advanced brewing processes in the world. Hence, the topic: IoT in Heineken’s brewing process.
After our Q&A session, we also understood how to structure the blog and what exactly was expected of us this week. Since writing a blog in this way was new to us, we decided to use the DMAIC structure and link our blogs to it. Additionally, we used the PCOI model in the analysis phase. This provided us with a lot of structure and clarity when writing the blogs. From there, it was just a matter of dividing the tasks and developing them further. During our research, we came across several interesting things. For instance, we found that the technology is actually much more advanced than we initially expected. Currently, Heineken’s production already tracks many parameters, such as temperature and pressure. Despite this, there is still a lot of room for growth in the future, and the rise of AI is a major trend in this area. While not much AI is being used yet, it will become more prominent in the coming years. These innovations are all aligned with Heineken’s strategy, as Heineken is very progressive when it comes to new technologies and innovations. All in all, this was a very educational research project for us as a group.
To wrap up the research, we will deliver a pitch at the end of the week. During this pitch, we will try to engage the assessors and the listening groups interactively and include them in a sort of demo. How we will approach this is still being brainstormed, and the result will be shown tomorrow in our demo.
In conclusion, as a group, we have learned a lot of new things again this week. Not only did we learn a great deal about the topic and the company Heineken, but we also learned how to work in a structured way with a blog and to think outside the box for our pitch.
